Not that long ago in the history of the Dragon's Land Sandy came
to live in the Brownston. She had little memory of whence she came and
found this exotic land strange and bewildering, but most of all she was
lonely. Sandy wandered around DragonMud meeting lots of people, some friendly
some scarey and some who she couldn't understand at all. And then one day she
met Calum.
At this time Calum was not yet a wizard, but he was a shaman and looking at Sandy
he could tell that there was something wrong. He looked deep into her eyes
and realized that part of her soul was missing. So Calum worked a strong
and ancient magic to pull through the other part of Sandy's soul from
whichever world she had left it. Both of them were very surprised when
Nith appeared.
In his first form Nith was a two foot long, stuffed velvet toy dragon. When Sandy picked him up he would snuggle and purr in her arms and whenever anyone
else tried to pet him he would growl and run away. Calum handed the toy
dragon to Sandy looking very perplexed, but the girl was very happy. So
happy in fact that Calum rather hoped she would fail to notice his
embaressment in mystically conjouring a stuffed toy.
After this Sandy would carry Nith where-ever she went. She continually told anyone she met how Nith was very definately alive, but few believed her.
Most people thought that Nith was simply a cute affectation.. but there was one
evil high priestess who thought differently and she did a terrible thing, she
stole Nith from Sandy. Sandy went wild, seemingly fearless of this wizard's
powers, she clawed at her, bit her, screamed and called down terrible curses on her head.
Morgen, of course, was utterly unmoved by these threats, but finally when she
was bored with watching the disraught Sandy she dropped Nith on the ground..
into a muddy puddle. Sandy picked up her soggy Nith and hugged him tightly, big
tears rolling down her face. Morgen laughed and left. And Sandy hated Morgen.
Taking her soggy toy with her Sandy ran to see the great Dragon of the mud.
Now, Sandy was very young and very inexperienced, but where NIth was concerned
she was also very cunning. She beseeched the Dragon to make Nith a wizard
so that he could face Morgen on equal terms. The dragon tried to kindly explain
about non-player characters, but Sandy would have none of it. She knew
Nith was real. At last the Dragon gave in. He couldn't see any harm in making
Nith a wizard and it would make Sandy happy, besides he had a sneaking
sympathy for a fellow dragon, even a toy one, in such sad circumstances.
Lady Modesty too added her pleas for Nith's magical endowment. So Nith
became a wizard.
From that day on Nith was at least four foot in length. He still never talked to anyone but Sandy, but he did other things. He would chase and eat the squirrels in the town square and if there was ever any chalk to hand he would wander off into a corner to draw lopsided pentagrams and chuckle evily. As he became known in the land it became clear that as Sandy was light so was Nith dark, but together they were extremely happy.
