The Cow gateway, as it has been established here, is
bad policy and bad for Dragonmud. For those of you who
haven't heard, a 'gateway' to cowmuse was opened in
the form of a character here who repeated everything
a character on cowmuse saw. And a character on Cowmuse
who repeated everything our 'gateway' character here
saw. This form of gateway, as far as I can see, gains
very little for either MU*. It was ill-conceived and
poorly implemented. It is not possible to see who is
listening on the other side of the gatweay. It is not
possible to communicate privately with an individual
across the gateway and, in the interest of preserving
dragonmud's boarders, the gateway is confined to a
single room. Therefore, it is impossible for Cow users
to explore Dragonmud. ALL they'll get out of it if
whatever we feel comfortable saying to an unseen and
unknown audience. Vote to close the gateway, until
such time as we find a place we really wish to link
to, and a better means of doing so. --cz
The gateway character as coneived by rebrane is a very
innovative idea and should be considered carefully. As
citizens of DragonMUD, we should not be reactionary,
and resist all change, but neither should we pursue
change without reason, for the sole sake of changing.
The gateway's purpose, for the cowmusers, is to allow
people without telnetting capabilities to explore
DragonMUD, without having to log in directly. This
goal will not be achieved, in any case, since the
gateway player is restricted to one room in DragonMUD,
which is not even a part of TinyLondon, but has been
created so that anachronisms will not occur in the
1800s theme. Why, then, should the gateway exist? I do
not see any benefit for the DragonMUD community, and in
fact I see only an impingement on our privacy, since we
never know who is listening, and the possiblity of a
propogation effect, where many mu*s will wish to have
gateways here, once a precedent has been set. Lastly,
we have all come to know DragonMUD as a familial, small
town community, and the social codes and politeness
here may be seriously jeapordized if we allow mu*s to
establish gateways here without any form of selection.
Cowmuse is very different from DragonMUD, and I
recommend that anyone who wishes to see this log in to
cowmuse. I say, let the cowmusers find their own
telnet accounts, and log in here personally, if they
wish to participate in our community.
